saves money and is completely safe. Fluoridated water

Joint resolution of Skagit-Island
Counties Medical Society and Mount Baker District Dental
Society supporting community water fluoridation
"BE IT RESOLVED, that the Skagit-Island Counties
Medical Society and the Mount Baker Dental Society urge the
Skagit County Commissioners to adopt a fluoridation
ordinance that would allow and require the Skagit County
Public Utility District No. 1 to adjust the natural level of
fluoride in its water supply so that a greater number of
Skagit County residents could receive the proven benefits of
fluoride and oral disease in Skagit County may be thereby
reduced."
Findings of Fact
about community water fluoridation from Skagit County
Public Health Officer
"Fluoridation of community drinking water is a major
factor responsible for the decline in dental caries (tooth
decay) during the second half of the 20th century.
Although other fluoride-containing products are available,
water fluoridation remains the most equitable and
cost-effective method of delivering fluoride to all members
of most communities, regardless of age, educational
attainment, or income level."
Howard Leibrand, M.D.
Skagit County Health Officer
Washington
Health Foundation
"By passing the fluoridation measure proposed for
the ballot this fall, the people of Skagit County will make
a significant contribution to helping Washington State
become the Healthiest State in the Nation."

National Organizations in favor of
community water fluoridation
Washington State Health Officer Maxine Hayes's
2006 statement
in favor of community water fluoridation
"Dental disease is an infectious bacterial disease
process that begins in infancy and continues throughout
life. Fluoride, when ingested in drinking water,
strengthens the enamel of developing teeth."
"The Department of Health supports water
fluoridation as a sound population-based public health
measure and it supports communities in their efforts to
fluoridate community water supplies."
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention
"To support CDC’s mission “to promote health and
quality of life by preventing and controlling disease,
injury and disability," the CDC national community water
fluoridation activities range from support to expand water
fluoridation into communities that are not fluoridated to
promote appropriate use of consumer fluoride products. CDC
maintains a national reporting system for water systems,
provides fluoridation training, collaborates with state and
tribal partners to increase their capacity to provide
fluoridated water to communities, and communicates
information about the benefits, safety, and
cost-effectiveness of water fluoridation."
American
Dental Association
"The American Dental Association unreservedly endorses the fluoridation of community water supplies as safe, effective and necessary in preventing tooth decay. This support has been the Association's position since policy was first adopted in 1950."
Surgeon General
"As noted in Oral Health in America: A Report of
the Surgeon General, community water fluoridation
continues to be the most cost-effective, equitable and safe
means to provide protection from tooth decay in a community.
Scientific studies have found that people living in
communities with fluoridated water have fewer cavities than
those where the water is not fluoridated."
