Commissioners should heed vote on fluoride
November 17, 2006
"This newspaper has consistently supported
fluoridation because of its proven health benefits in
thousands of communities, including some in Skagit
County. It's time for the commissioners to keep
faith with the voters, acknowledge the prevailing wisdom
and approve fluoridation."
Yes to county advisory vote on fluoridation
October 18, 2006
"We have consistently recommended fluoridation of
local water supplies, based on decades of evidence that
it produces better dental health communitywide and that
oral health is crucial for overall well-being."
"For that reason, we urge approval of Proposition 2, in
hopes that strong and decisive community support will
move the commissioners off the spot they have been
sitting for too long."
Fluoride would bank health dividends*
September 1, 2006
By Dr. Howard Leibrand, Skagit County Health Officer and
emergency room physician
"As
the County's health officer, I'm responsible for the
health of our community. I want to share my
findings about water fluoridation so people can make
decisions based on facts, not emotion or
misinformation."
"The evidence in support of water fluoridation is
overwhelming. Research throughout the past 60
years makes it clear that water fluoridation is safe,
effective and economical way to reduce tooth decay for
all ages."
"As a community, we have a shared responsibility to
protect the health and welfare of our citizens, young
and old. We have an obligation to make certain our
kids grow up strong, healthy and are able to succeed in
school. Skagit County residents for years to come
will enjoy better oral and overall health if elected
officials have the courage to do what is right for our
community and fluoridate the water."

Fluoridation's Great Benefits are Proven
June 26, 2005
"Decades of research have shown a clear link between
dental health and the health of the whole body.
The beginning of good dental health is building strong
teeth. Fluoridation has been playing a big role to
that end for generations.
In the communities where fluoridation has been
available in public water supplies, families have saved
thousands of dollars in dental bills later in life."
Commissioners dodging duty on fluoride issue
September 25, 2005
"It's a tough call, and someone has to make it.
Specifically, the Skagit County commissioners, acting as
the County Board of Health, must decide whether to
require the fluoridation of water in the Skagit Public
Utility District."
"The county's residents deserve an answer, and soon."
"This newspaper has supported fluoridation and
continues to do so."
Fluoride Vote Appears to be More Stalling
August 4, 2006
"We would prefer to see more definitive leadership on
the issue, which properly resides with the commissioners
in their capacity as the county health board."
"It remains our belief that the water should be
fluoridated for many sound, well-established health
reasons. We remain similarly convinced that the
arguments against fluoridation don't add up to a
reasonable case against it. Time and money would
be spent campaigning on an advisory vote, and it would
cost the county time and money to administer an election
that likely would require additional ballot forms. We
wonder, in each case, if the hours and dollars couldn't
be put to better use."
Advisory vote on fluoridation may be illusory
September 23, 2006
"We continue to support fluoridationas a necessary
public health measure and are hopeful that a majority of
voters on the advisory question will agree. Maybe that
will at last give the commissioners a rationale for
doing what could have been done months ago."
